Offshore Wind Farm Wave Treader Analysis

Prospect analysis on Wave Treader

January 09 - April 09

Analysis by Prospect, a Hallin subsidiary, has demonstrated that an offshore wind turbine can have a wave power device fitted that generates an extra 500KW of electricity, sufficient to power 125 homes, with no strengthening to its structure.

Prospect has undertaken analysis of Wave Treader, an innovation invented by Green Ocean Energy Ltd, to demonstrate that it can be effectively mounted on an offshore wind turbine support structure to generate wind and wave power from the same installation.

Prospect’s analysis revealed that the technology could be added to offshore wind turbines without having to increase the structural capacity of the turbines foundations and substructure, and with no detrimental effect to operational life or reliability.

These results have a major impact on the economics of introducing the Wave Treader to offshore wind turbines. With no modifications required to the structure or power cables, the project becomes far more commercially viable.
